34-35 — Annabelle Iszatt The Neighborhood’s Cemetery Le cimetière du quartier TALA SHELBAYH Small cemeteries are disappearing from the dense urban fabric of Amman. Poorly adapted and insufficiently planned, they are in demise. But why create new ones on the outskirts when these historic places play a central role in their neighborhoods? The project proposes a new cemetery typology, which distinguishes the burial units and the funeral home, underground, from the public space. Limiting space consumption is a major issue. For all that, precious attention is paid to the spaces between. The sepulchers are organized around patios bathed in a soothing zenithal light. A public space on the surface, a welcome breath of fresh air for the people in the neighborhood, plays a role in the affirmation of community ties (worship, library, collective kitchen). The space of the dead proves its necessary quality near the living. Les petits cimetières tendent à disparaître du tissu urbain dense d’Amman. Mal adaptés et insuffisamment planifiés, ils atteignent leurs limites. Mais pourquoi en créer de nouveaux en périphérie alors que ces lieux historiques jouent un rôle central dans leur quartier ? Le projet propose une nouvelle typologie de cimetière, qui distingue les unités d’inhumation et la maison funéraire, en sous-sol, de l’espace public. Limiter la consommation d’espace est un enjeu majeur. Pour autant, une attention précieuse est portée aux entre-deux. Les sépultures s’organisent autour de patios baignés d’une lumière zénithale apaisante. En surface, un espace public, respiration bienvenue pour les habitants, participe à l’affirmation des liens communautaires (culte, bibliothèque, cuisine collective).
