36-37 — Annabelle Iszatt Performative Landscapes Paysages Performatifs SAMUEL CLOVIS The Big Bend Thermal Power Plant in Florida is a heavy polluter, generating harmful algae blooms in Tampa Bay as well as coal and phosphate contamination of the bay. Paradoxically, it also creates the conditions of an ideal refuge for manatees. In winter, this endangered local species takes advantage of the waters warmed by the power plant. With a network of facilities capable of capturing and using the waste from the thermal power plant, the project presents an equal mastery of the technical, architectural, and landscape response. The noxious waste finds a second life to enrich the surrounding agricultural production. Bioreactors and open pond farms are combined with the emergence of new vegetated sloped landscape, in symbiosis with the natural environment. The study substantiates its pertinence to the implementation of an urban strategy that respects the environment. La centrale thermique de Big Bend en Floride est lourdement polluante, générant la prolifération d’algues nuisibles dans la baie de Tampa, ainsi que la contamination de celle-ci au charbon et au phosphate. Paradoxalement, elle crée aussi les conditions idéales d’un refuge pour les lamantins. L’hiver, cette espèce locale menacée profite des eaux réchauffées par la centrale. À l’aide d’un réseau d’installations capables de capturer et d’utiliser les déchets de l’usine thermique, le projet présente une maîtrise égale de la réponse technique, architecturale et paysagère. Les rebuts nocifs trouvent une seconde vie pour amender une production agricole environnante.
