‘A’A’ Presents LafargeHolcim Awards Prize Winners | Next Generation

38-39 TESTIMONY OF A FORMER LAUREATE TÉMOIGNAGE D’UN ANCIEN LAURÉAT How did the LafargeHolcim Foundation impact your debut as a professional architect? It represented a big push in both my professional and personal trajectories indeed. The LafargeHolcim Foundation’s recognition strengthened my on-going research regarding invisible infrastructures in São Paulo and reinforced the next steps of my awarded speculative project. Also thanks to the University of São Paulo’s support, I built a 1:1 prototype in the second largest favela in the city of São Paulo, the “everyday HOUSE”, enabling its replication by the inhabitants themselves in order to enhance the environmental quality of selfbuilt and rapid-growing territories. And it has already started! This design process was also presented in the 11th and 12th São Paulo architecture Biennials, besides lectures and publications around the globe. According to you, what could be the main action levers, in the industrial field, for a more sustainable and conscious construction? I highlight the importance of the industrial field working closely with designers, thinkers, universities, governments, NGOs and society. Therefore, I will use the pronoun “we” to refer to these action levers, meaning a network of decision-makers organised in an ideal way. Well, we undoubtedly need to forge industry and architecture as a context-oriented, simple, replicable and scalable apparatus. Industry should not limit itself to the production of material goods, it should go towards ‘immaterial’ (methods, technologies); and always in deep respect to the design role (i.e. high-efficiency engine versus poorly designed car). Besides that, the actions should balance some paradigms: global versus local; machine versus human; generic versus specific (context, climate, components, materials); new versus retrofitted; mono versus multifunctional; immutable versus adaptable; exclusive versus accessible; user versus usability. To the question asked at the Venice Biennale ‘How will we live together’, I would add: ‘How will we make it together’? Could you tell us about your current research topics and projects? My research and projects have always focused on urban interstices, described as neglected spaces, at the same time sources of conflicts and presenting multiple possibilities. In that context I have concluded my PhD entitled ‘A São Paulo for the Future’, an investigative and prospective approach towards the construction of an effective invisible infrastructure in the city of São Paulo, guided by morphological, environmental, and social parameters. Besides this and my role as advisor of Council of Architecture and Urbanism of São Paulo (CAU/SP), I am currently preparing the next step of my project in favelas, sharing an online do-it-yourself guide in order to inform the process of self-construction in a more sustainable way. “HOW WILL WE MAKE IT TOGETHER ?” — Eduardo Pizarro Architect, urban designer and Professor in Saõ Paulo, Brazil.
