48-49 — Annabelle Iszatt The approach proposes a new architectural and social model which is contextualized and inclusive for Manaus, capital of the state of Amazonas in north Brazil. Addressing the lack of housing for low-income residents, the composition combines housing, culture, recreation, and commerce for a layered village along the river. Three levels of reading are superimposed: near the water the variable uses (fishing, rest, event), overhung by a suspended street (education, market, restoration). On top, the housing enjoys a connection to the sky. Constructed in locally sourced reforested wood built with local construction techniques results in an architecture harmonious and respectful of the Amazonian culture. The project’s performance is functional, environmental, and aesthetic. Attractive in its surrounding environment, it reinforces the local microeconomy. Palliant le manque de logements pour les habitants à faible revenu, la composition associe habitat, culture, loisir, commerce, et redessine un village en strates bordant la rivière. Trois niveaux de lecture s’y superposent : près de l’eau les usages flexibles (pêche, repos, évènements), surplombés par une rue suspendue (éducation, marché, restauration). Enfin, les logements profitent d’une ouverture vers le ciel. L’autoconstruction en bois régional et l’appui de techniques constructives locales aboutissent à une architecture sensible et respectueuse de la culture amazonienne.
