Brinda Somaya
Principal Architect and Managing Director, Somaya and Kalappa Consultants, Mumabi, India
Brinda Somaya is an architect and urban conservationist. She first studied architecture at Mumbai University before being awarded a Master’s of Arts degree and Honorary Doctorate degree from Smith College. In 1978, she established Somaya and Kalappa Consultants (SNK) in Mumbai, India. Throughout her career, she has merged architecture, conservation and social equity in projects ranging from building institutional campuses to rehabilitating earthquake-torn villages and restoring an eighteenth-century cathedral. In 2014, the Indian Institute of Architects awarded her the Baburao Mhatre Gold Medal and, in 2016, she was appointed as chairperson at the School of Planning and Architecture in Vijayawada. She is currently the AD White Professor-at- large at Cornell University and a member of the Board for the Holcim Foundation. Her monograph, titled Brinda Somaya Works & Continuities, was published in 2018.
